Overweight in TCM/Traditional Chinese Medicine

TCM views the cause of overweight as the accumulation of waste and poor circulation of qi in the body while the solution to overweight in modern Western medicine is to reduce absorption and lose body fat.

When the circulation of qi is not smooth, unnecessary dampness, stagnant blood, etc. are accumulated here and there in the body by causing weight gain, digestive problems, pain, and other discomforts. Are there different body types of weight gain?

“Weight Management I:

Based on Four Constitutions in Traditional Korean Medicine”

https://aculoverbooldongyi.blogspot.com/2024/04/a-weight-management-strategy-based-on.html

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the earth is represented by Yin, and the sky by Yang. Yang traits are flexible, whereas yin qualities are resistant to change, much as the earth is responsive to alterations in the sky. In the same way, individuals possessing a strong Yin constitution tend to be more introverted, protective, and passive, whereas those with a strong yang constitution are gregarious, dynamic, and outgoing. The more reclusive and introverted Yin constitution is generally more prone to be overweight than the more outgoing and lively Yang constitution.

Taiyang people’s bigger lungs relative to smaller livers result in a well-formed upper body but a poorly developed digestive track.  They are typically thin and tall. Taiyin people with large Livers are prone to overeating and weight gain since they have a voracious appetite and digestive system.  ShaoYang people are good at digesting food, which makes their lower bodies weaker. They don’t put on much weight in relation to what they eat. People who are overweight typically gain weight primarily on their forearms and chest. Shaoyin people are prone to abdominal and/or lower body obesity due to slow digestion and poor blood circulation.

In TCM, there are several classifications for overweight depending on the constitution, Qi an blood balance, pathogenic factors associated with your lifestyle, living environment, and underlying medical conditions.

For instance, being overweight may be the result of the body having too much damp/moisture and phlegm/mucus in the body. In this instance, the goal of treatment should be to resolve damp and phlegm accumulation.

Weak constitution of qi includes slow blood flow, cold hands and feet, and low stamina, which leads to easy fatigue. While people with high levels of stagnant blood in their bodies have also poor circulation, which causes the blood to clot and build and lead to weight gain. Those  with powerful livers have good appetites and absorption but are also prone to stress and overeating, which makes them prone to weight gain.

Traditional Medicine Diets for Weight Loss

Food is the best medicine, according to a term from traditional Korean medicine.  Proper nutrition and regular meal habits are paramount, as is a balanced daily routine that includes adequate hydration, healthy sleep, and moderate exercise.

Given the preceding remark, a person with a cold constitution should stay away from cold/raw foods. Overweight is associated with both inadequate and excessive digestion, consume foods that aid in digestion, take probiotics or fermented foods, and supplements that balance acid. Take caution not to overeat if your digestion is overly active.

Customary herbs to support

Ginseng and Huangqi are beneficial for those with low Qi/Energy. The body's heat facilitates the flow of Qi more readily. Korean ginseng is recommended for people with both cold constitution and weak qi while American ginseng is indicated for those who feel relentlessly exhausted with no cold constitution.

A homemade Ginseng Tang is good if you are feeling easily cold and weakness:

1. Wash and Add Korean ginseng 12-20g, dates, and ginger in the pot.

2.Fill the pot with enough water to cover all of the ingredients.

3. Simmer for approximately two hours on medium-low heat.

4. Boil it first at medium heat and then at a lower temperature  to prevent the bubbles from overflowing.

5. Turn off the heat after the water has reduced by half.

6. Cool and sip half or 1/3 of a cup three times a day in between meals. (adding a little bit of honey helps enhance the flavor

7. The boiling ingredients can be reused at least three times.

8. Transfer the leftover ginseng decoction into a glass container and keep it chilled. Take a small quantity and warm it up every time you want to drink any.

Traditional Therapies - Acupuncture, Electro-acupuncture, Moxibustion, Cupping, and Auriculotherapy

The body and ears are treated with acupuncture to ease tight muscles and promote the breakdown of excess fat. By stimulating the acupuncture points, acupuncture increases Qi circulation, replenishes deficient energy, and eliminates waste. Additionally, it stimulates the region of the brain responsible for sedative, diuretic, and appetite-suppressive effects.

In specifically, electro-acupuncture involves the use of low frequencies to dissolve fat and restructure the body, minimizing the size of fatty areas, by inserting needles into thick layers of fat.

Moxibustion is made up of dried mugwort, which is applied to acupuncture points to promote Qi and blood flow and enhance metabolism. In addition, moxibustion aids in the body’s removal of coldness, waste, and inflammation.

Cupping uses negative pressure to push out congestion and stagnant blood in order to improve circulation.

Tuina and reshaping the physique

TCM maintains that a body is in optimal health when Qi flows in a balanced pattern, with warmth flowing downhill to keep the legs and abdomen warm and cold flowing upward to keep the head clear and cool. An imbalance between heat and cold in the body can lead to disease.

Imbalanced body alignment and bad posture block the flow of Qi, causing discomfort, sickness, indigestion, insomnia, persistent exhaustion, and other issues.

Realigning the posture can reduce pain and illness by releasing waste products, relieving tense muscles, and boosting blood flow to help maintain an ideal body temperature.
